Here are short definitions for our oil qualities.

Natural Oils

After production, natural oils are only filtered. Natural oils are not refined and therefore contain all the substances from the seed. They have a higher content of fat-accompanying substances – the unsaponifable matter. These are partly visible as cloudy matter setting at the bottom of the oil jar. Our natural oils are cold-pressed or CO2-extracted.

Cold Pressed

The term “cold pressed” states that the oil is extracted through pressing without external heat and subsequently filtered. The oil has not been refined using chemical solvents or deodorized using steam. The term does not specify the exact temperature that was reached during production. Cold-pressed oils have a limited shelf-life and should generally not be heated.

CO2-Extracted

CO2-extracted oils are produced through extraction in supercritical carbon dioxide. By applying pressure the density of the carbon dioxide is increased, producing an effective solvent. The moderate temperatures and the antioxidative CO2-atmosphere during this process of physical extraction cause much less strain on the oil than other production methods.

Post Treated Oils

Oftentimes the product-typical taste and smell is not desired or the oil has to be free from fat-accompanying substances for technical reasons.

Deodorised

Deodorisation is a sub-process of refinement. Here steam is used to remove unwanted substances like flavoring and coloring. Deodorized oil is more or less neutral in taste and smell. Deodorization can be used for organic oils as this is not a chemical process.

Refined (Chemical)

Oil fruits or seeds are pressed using high temperatures. The press cake can be further extracted using solvents like hexane or trichloroethylene. During refinement the unpleasantly smelling crude oil is degummed, neutralized, bleached and deodorized using water, acid, brine, activated carbon or bleaching clay. Cloudy matter, herbal mucilage, free fatty acids, colouring, odourous and flavouring substances, as well as pesticide and solvent residues are removed. The final product has lost sensitive substances like betacarotene and vitamin E, and secondary plant compounds like carotinoides. Refined oil is virtually odourless and tasteless.
